Daria Marchenko is a new member of the horsetimes team. She lives in Germany and knows firsthand what is love to horses. Horsetimes spoke with Daria about horses, trainings, performances and her plans.
Dasha, how did you come to Equestrian sports?
It started with our sports teacher brining every Thursday horses to school. He rented two from the farm block. I ran away from lessons to ride on them. Than I begged my parents for one year to bring me to the stable. As I was a kid with no certain hobbies my parents treated it coldly. After a year they took me to the Equestrian Club “Romashkovo” where we bought me a horse at the same day. That is how it started.
Do you remember your first Tour?
I couldn’t believe that I’m going to perform indeed. My coach asked me: “Dasha, will you perform?”. And I answered “I? I will perform? Am I actually ready?” I’ve just learned to gallop. I performed in Children category. I was really worried but took the third place.
When did you decide to perform professionally?
I decided it when we bought my first horse. I came to the Equestrian Club and watched how riders perform. I understood that I could never refuse to perform. My father was a member of the USSR Hockey National Team. He knows what sport means.
Could you tell about your nearest plans?
At the beginning of May we plan to go to Holland. Than to Haagen in Belgium. I wish I could participate to the European Championship. I think that I didn’t have enough strength and confidence before the Tour in USA. Now I do though I have a rather new horse. After Wellington we became really closer.
Do you perform in Russia?
No, I don’t. I live in Germany. It’s hard to transfer horses. The way from Europe to Russia takes four days. The main reason is that there are no European rivals. When one wins in Russia, there appears comparison in Europe. And you want to prove that you can better. Comparison is very important. While watching performances of German National team performances you realize that you can do it too.
What is the difference between the Equestrian school in Russia and in Europe?
There are so many differences, it’ hard to single them out. One is for sure that equestrian sports is in blood of people in Europe. People in Western Europe including Germany consider themselves to be Dressage founders. They know and love their horses, that is why they know Equestrian sports.
Tell us about your coach
My coach is Christophe Koshel. He took prizes at the World Dressage Championship in 2010 in Kentucky, Domperidon. Anna Kasprzak from Danmark performes there now. Unfortunately they couldn’t go together to the Olympic Games 2012 because the owners decided to sell the horse.
What do you expect from the horsetimes team membership?
It’s very important for me. The Tours consist of happiness and tears. Luckily my parents and I can share our emotions with the team now. It’s a pity that I had to skip the Tours in Vidauban and in Barcelona but I’m with the team now and it’s great. I’ve never got so much attention as a rider. Horsetimes let us think what we do for World Equestrian Games and for other tours. It’s not just riding, it is a clear aim.
